Chapter 113: Fierce L2

Following an ear-splitting metal cutting sound, Yue Zhong had used his power on the L2’s waist to cut a thin small crack. Even with him adding stats to strength and power and using the sharp Imitation Tang Sword, he could only cut this little bit. The bones weren’t even visible.

The exterior of the black keratin membrane was like cutting into steel.

The L2 looked at Yue Zhong like he was just a little insect buzzing in front of his eyes. It ruthlessly slammed its large hand towards Yue Zhong.

Yue Zhong’s agility far exceeded that of the L2. His body slightly shifted, avoiding the L2’s strike, and he used the sword to slash the L2’s elbow.

Unexpectedly countless sparks flew out as soon as the Imitation Tang Sword landed on the L2’s body, and he was unable to cut through.

The L2 waved a hand to slap Yue Zhong.

As soon as the L2 moved, Yue Zhong side-stepped, and he circled around the L2. He started the skill Devil Flame, and a ball of scarlet-red flame lit up from his right hand.

Yue Zhong used a knife hand to chop into the L2’s thigh. The Devil Flame started to madly combust an enormous hole as soon as it landed on the L2’s thigh.

Yue Zhong circled around the L2’s thigh, and it was immediately cut in two by the Devil Flame.

The L2 lost its balance, and heavily fell on the ground.

Yue Zhong took a large step forward, stepping a foot onto the L2’s forehead. A scarlet-red Devil Flame momentarily burst from his foot, turning the L2’s skull into ash.

A large experience orb entered Yue Zhong’s body as soon as the L2 died. The L2’s corpse also dropped a skill book and a green treasure box.

Yue Zhong quickly put the skill book and green treasure box into his bag.

Finished with the L2, Yue Zhong finally turned and looked with a livid face at those who abandoned their commander Xiao Ming and fled.

Those who had abandoned their weapons and fled were all detained and brought before Yue Zhong by his subordinates.

One of Xiao Ming’s subordinates looked at Yue Zhong with fear, and he knelt before Yue Zhong, begging: “I’m sorry! Captain Yue! Spare my life! From today on I will face the enemy without fear!! Please allow me to atone for my sins!”

“Captain Yue!! Release us this one time! We won’t commit an offense again after today!”

“I’m begging you to spare our lives! That monster was too strong! We were no match. Staying there was merely being sent to death!!”

The subordinates of Xiao Ming who had fled, knelt before Yue Zhong and started begging.

Xiao Ming looked at those who fled, and then he said to Yue Zhong a little hesitantly: “Captain Yue, we should give them another chance!”

Yue Zhong looked at the eight subordinates of Xiao Ming and coldly said: “It doesn’t matter what the reason, all of you committed the offense of fleeing the battlefield. All of you will be shot on site!”

Xiao Ming couldn’t help but persuade: “Captain Yue! Training a team member isn’t that easy!”

If the eight men of Xiao Ming’s group were shot and killed, then he would forfeit his team’s combat ability. Although the eight men turned tail and ran, they were all strong young men. Also they understand how to use guns. It would be troublesome to train and recruit new people, and it would take some time to make them combat ready.

Yue Zhong stared at Xiao Ming and coldly said: “Military law is ruthless. What good is military law if it isn’t carried out ruthlessly? Get to work!”

Receiving the command of Yue Zhong, his direct subordinates took out their guns and aimed at the heads of the eight men, then pulled the trigger.

Following the sound of eight gunshots, Xiao Ming’s eight subordinates were all executed.

Looking at the miserable scene, Xiao Ming couldn’t bear to turn his head. The surrounding people who looked at this scene all shivered with fear in their hearts. They now had a much deeper familiarization with military law.

Yue Zhong looked at Xiao Ming and dully said: “Xiao Ming’s command is detrimental. Dissolve the fifth team leader captain position. The fifth unit will be absorbed into the second unit. Xiao Ming is demoted to a preliminary team member.”

Just now when Xiao Ming discovered the indomitable strength of the L2, he should have given the command to retreat. He didn’t give the command to retreat, and this is an unforgivable error.

But Xiao Ming was a qualified soldier. His training was the most regimented, and he possessed an extremely powerful innate shooting ability. He already had a seventy percent bulls-eye rate from within a hundred meters.

Xiao Ming’s heart was a little disappointed, he nodded and responded: “Yes!”

Yue Zhong looked at Xiao Ming and said: “Go to the second unit and report, clear out the zombies.”

“Yes!”

Xiao Ming yelled a response and brought his remaining people over to Da Gouzi’s second combat unit.

The second combat unit’s command was temporarily given over to Da Gouzi after Ji Qingwu left. Yue Zhong didn’t have many people he could trust under his command.

The main power in the center of the town was wiped out. The few remaining scattered zombies couldn’t withstand the armed forces.

One of Liu Yan’s team members walked over to Yue Zong and reported: “Captain Yue! We discovered a survivor! They want to meet you!”

Yue Zhong asked: “Who is it?”

The team member said: “They call themselves the mayor of Stone Horse village.”

Yue Zhong thought a moment and then said to the soldier: “Take me to have a look.”

Yue Zhong arrived at a spacious manor house under the guidance of the soldier.

He could see inside the manor that five survivors were being watched over by four soldiers with guns.

A fatty with a belly as if he was nine months pregnant yelled: “I want to meet your leader!!”

The soldiers coldly looked at the survivors without saying a word.

“You want to meet me?” Yue Zhong walked before the man name Wei Cheng and dully said.

Wei Cheng pointed to the young man who had a look of arrogance and said: “I am Wei Cheng, the mayor of Stone Horse Village. This person is the son of the Longhai City secretary. So long as you escort us to the Longhai City survivor base, the secretary certainly won’t forget your act of kindness.”

Yue Zhong looked over at the young man.

The young man’s face was arrogant, and two beautiful twenty-one or twenty-two year old women clung onto him. Their faces unchanged even though they were surrounded by the four soldiers. Looking at Yue Zhong with a slanted eye he proudly said: “You are this army’s chief?” I am Qian Yiming! You only need to escort me to Longhai City survivor base. My father will certainly make you a big official.”

“Idiot!” A word bubbled up in Yue Zhong’s mind while looking at the arrogant face of Qian Yiming.

At this time, two soldiers brought in four malnourished looking women wearing ragged clothes. They were all of different sizes.

Liu Yan looked at one in the group who was rather pretty and said: “This is our leader, Yue! Whatever words you have,  say them to our Captain Yue!”

The rather pretty woman burst into tears when she saw Yue Zhong. She knelt down before him and pointed at Qian Yiming, begging: “Mighty Captain Yue! I’m begging you, help me kill that scum!!”

    1. Nope, I don´t think so.
If found out that would make Longhai City Survivor Base his complete enemy.
And that´s something Yue tries to avoid.

So my guess is that those 2 men and the 2 well-fed women will be given enough food to last a week and then are thrown out of Stone Horse village telling them the direction of Longhai City and to go there themselves.

That way if those four people die no one in Longhai City Survivor Base can blame him for it or even knows about those four being connected to him.

And if one or two of them actually arrive at Longhai City and someone from the city asks him in the futture why he didn´t help them then Yue can simply mention that he couldn´t return to the city because of that incident with the Ice King Accosiation and hence couldn´t help those four people.

      1. Depends if he kills all of them or not. Dead men tell no tales and this is the apocalypse no one is going to be doing any CSI type shit. The only way this would come back to bite him is if he let the mayor go back after killing the little bastard. Even that isn’t likely as it doesn’t seem to be a short walk and I doubt they could make it back without protection.

      2. that scum look the type of people that would get revenge for not being pampered all the all way. So if you ignore him and he reach Longhai he’ll reveal the location of stone Horse village and then all hell will break lose.
comparing with killing him from the start, longhai city will only find out if there is a rat those troop that first found him (my bet is xiao ming) and then the result is the same ( all out war) so… pop that guy

      1. It was said previously that in these small villages a lot of the people living there would stockpile food in their homes. And it said they found these people in a big manor house, most large houses like that would have a basement or cellar, hiding underground like that would be good for evading zombies since sounds and smells wouldn’t transmit out easily.

  1. I love the concept and world-setting but this MC needs to die in a fire. He spouts bullshit about military law, when he was never even in a military. Takes a bunch of barely, if at all, trained people and threw them against zombies that vastly outnumber them… then spares the inept commander who was ‘such a good innate shooter’ that he must be spared, while killing the eight men that fled because their commander was too much of an idiot to call a retreat.

In this situation, you cultivate the people who fled, or you ban them from front-line service and make them a workhorse in the village. The COMMANDER was at fault. Yet, all he did was demote his sorry butt after murdering eight men who fled a battle that could not be won with the equipment they had because they didn’t have plot armor. Yet, somehow this MC is considered awesome and great and realistic.

Saying things like ‘The world is changed, survival of the fittest’ is nice. He survived purely by nothing more than luck. Without White Bones in the beginning he would be staggering around lian jiang looking for brains. Yet, he so casually dismisses others as weak or feeble.

He survived purely on luck in the beginning. Without his magical skeleton tank, he would have been dead hundreds of times over… but somehow he thinks this translates into him having any idea what it is to lead people. His style is ‘Do this or I kill you.’

A lot of people think that would work. Maybe most of the time a world like that needs a bully with a sword to lead people. I wouldn’t want to be within 100 miles of the guy if something like this happened. Get conscripted into his little army, no real training, given equipment that does NOTHING and then get murdered because the one he was stupid enough to put in charge of you was inept.

If his goal was cited as ‘I want to kill of all the men who might one day be strong enough to take my women away.’ I could see it. Citing military laws and crap when he never served in a military and his only soldiering skills came from a magical memory upload is asinine.

I like the concept of this story. I certainly won’t drop it, but the guy needs to find an enemy he can’t just one-shot, and get his teeth bashed in to be reminded what it’s not like to have extreme plot armor.

Tl:Dr – The MC is an idiot who thinks he knows what it is to be in charge. He kills his subordinates for fleeing from an impossible battle, but spares the inept commander who did not sound the retreat. He should die in a fire, and someone who is just as ruthless, but has common sense enough not to kill off large swathes of his manpower in favor of keeping inept commanders alive.

Sheesh, if you’re going to be ruthless and murder people while calling it military law, then kill the inept commander too. Get rid of the whole group and save on supplies. Don’t keep the idiot that forced his men to flee. They aren’t white bones. They have no infection protection. One scratch and they die.

    1. Remember he is in China.

While he likely doesn’t have military experience as a university student, their military to some extent does treat their regular soldiers like disposable assets. Add the corruption and nepotism rampant in any of their organisations and yes while I agree with you he is basically going to lower the quality of his troops over time if he carries on in this manner – but I’m not surprised by his behaviour.

Even in Western military forces where they have read the case studies that bastardisation produces poor quality soldiers incapable of making decisive decisions on the ground and incapable of independent action, the practice is still pretty wide-spread even if unofficially.

      1. I’m not particularly surprised by the behavior, either. At least he makes slightly more sense than certain main characters that pop up in Japan. His characterization just feels disingenuous, though. He goes from regular garden variety university student to what basically amounts to a blood knight in less than a few paragraphs.

Sure, he’s technically a Dark Knight, but given how easily he kills people I have to wonder if he was actually an undiagnosed sociopath prior to the end of the world. I know he had been in a few fights when he was younger, but his mentality was so strong that I’m surprised that he wasnt raised by a family of zombie hunters.

    2. I think in this case the one who doesn´t understand the situation is you!

If Yue spared those 8 people then the other “normal” members of the other squads would witness that and therefore conclude that EVERYONE would get a chance to ignore orders at least once and be forgiven about it.

Furthermore this information would spread like wildfire in the village to everyone as well.

Then in the future at any time some squad members could try to run away because “they would be given a second chance later”.
That would endanger ALL of Yue´s ordered missions.

On the contrary executing those eigth men really does seem cruela and cold-hearted.
But the information about Yue not forgiving any defections would prevent or at least minimize the risk of something like that happening in crucial moments again – for example when the fighting squads aren´t just out for loot but are actually defending the village from outside attacks.

Sparing the leader is also the right choice for he was unable to make the right choice regarding retreat but he himself also didn´t run away.
That means he has the courage to fight even if there´s no hope in sight and so he will definitely follow any orders till the end.
So the only thing he needs to improve is his judgement about the correct decision he has to make as a squad leader.
And as punishment demoting him is the perfect choice, too, as this allows him to still provide fighting potential and slowly grow to become suitable for a leader position.

      1. Also you forgot that ALL those squad members THEMSELVES apllied to join the fighting squads.
They were not conscripted but hired while being told about the rules, rewards and punishments BEFORE joining the fighting force.
They all agreed to the fact that disobedience on the battlefield would lead to death.

Of course, they might not have been prepared for it in reality but they themselves agreed to it when joining the squads.
If they didn´t have the intention to see that decision through to the end then they simply should have not joined the squads.

        1. I thank you for your lengthy reply. Here is mine. 🙂

As someone who HAS been in war time situations and has performed real military service, I heartily disagree. I fully understand the situation and his particular style of non-leadership. It’s the self-serving warlord archetype, which is fine if he would just own up to it properly.

A single defining statement of, “I know I am not a leader. I have no skill or ability as such. However, I am stronger than you and you will do what I say or die.” would do wonders for my respect for him. That’s legitimately all I need from him at the moment, an acceptance that he is a poor leader, but screw it. I’m in charge. Do what I say.

If he did that, or even had someone properly call him out on his crap, it would do wonders for me.

At the moment he just comes off as an abrasive thug with a love for younger girls, and given how many women have apparently been raped in this story I have to wonder if the only reason the guy is tolerable at all is the fact that he is one of the only men who hasn’t raped 50 women yet. He also gives bread to women who feel forced into prostitution. It would have been a heart warming scene for me, if he made any sense to me in any other aspect.

I’d have to be all Rick Grimes about it instead. Kill the threats, handle the idiots, banish those who don’t pull their weight and kill them if you have to later. It took him a while to get there, and he took a trip through crazy town to reach it, but I find him more believable in such a role.

Rick developed into someone who can be both hyper aggressive badass, actually LEAD people and work to make sure EVERYONE who is going out of the gate is capable of surviving to at least some degree because their life matters. Though, I suppose some people prefer this method. From the Walking Dead perspective, this is probably similar to what a Chinese Shane would have been like if Shane had survived.

Basically, I don’t currently like the MCs leadership style. “You ran away, therefore you must die!”

Of course they freaking ran away. Any normal person without plot armor, or who didn’t lack in common sense would have. They obviously didn’t even run that far away.

Yes, those men signed up for the job. However, claiming “You chose this, it’s on you.” Is disingenuous.

You offer a half-starved man the chance to eat a meal and feed his equally starving family, they’ll say anything. These men who were not trained stood fast in front of over a thousand zombies when they had never fought a real battle and could die with but a single tiny scratch. A single, tiny scratch. Even a little blood splatter might infect them. Those so-called brave ‘close combat’ people might seem brave in comparison, but they had been given god and devil world items. I’m sure at least a few of them had the left over items that allowed them to resist infection.

I understood and accepted the first guy running and being shot. The fight had not started. However, this squad would have been a little over 1/6 of his fighting force. The eight recruits who fled would have had to have taken down dozens, if not hundreds of zombies before this fight. They DID FIGHT. They did their duty in regards to their actual capabilities. In short, these very human people with no training faced down a thousand zombies and fought to the best of their abilities. Their commander failed them. Their reward for having more sense than Xiao was death.

Yue is in fact, a hypocrite. He speaks of military discipline and following orders. He killed about 1/8 of his fighting force by his own order. He is not a military commander, he is a guy using these people solely for his own benefit. That’s the hypocrisy. He kills them for fleeing from a hopeless battle, when they have never been in a real battle before.

If this were truly a realistic storyline, a lot of the men would be leaving that village and taking their families with them. Dying like a dog out in the world would be terrible, but living under the rulership of a man who murders men who fought for him would not work with at least a few of them.

At this point, I honestly have begun to wonder if he is just trying to kill off every man he meets in one way or another so that he can have all the girls. If he would be genuinely shown to want this outcome, and the narrative presented itself that way, I might even be interested in reading about such a creature. As it stands, I just have to wonder why anyone would follow this guy other than a sincere fear that he would kill them or strip them naked and dump them in the middle of a city.

If anything, that curiosity is the main reason I keep reading. “Who would follow someone like this, if there were literally any other option?” That’s what keeps me interested.

  2. new site with ads, good, now i can support with disable adblock and klick some and ads when visit, (the ads are perfect, not many just 2-3 simple ads), hope no video ads/ sound ads
    goodwork,

  3. Thanks for the chapter!

Also, might I give a tip about the page design? Add a bit of empty space bellow the comment-field.

As it is now, you scroll to the bottom, click on the comment field and then you have to scroll down some more to be able to click the ‘Post Comment’ button! If you add that space, that last bit of scrolling will be omitted.

It’s a tiny detail, but I’d say it’s quite important as it saves a number of clicks, which isn’t nothing when it comes to interface design!

  4. Thanks for the chapter. Anyone know how many of these there are in total to go? can’t find anywhere on the net that says

    1. It’s not like he has any choice. Especially if his group continues to grow as they find more survivors who are willing to stay with them. If he is too lenient, there’s bound to be insubordinations and maybe even a coup d’e tat from people who might find his rules unsatisfactory. At least by being ruthless to those who disobey his commands, he’ll be able to form a group who will be willing to die with him and would not betray him later on. It would also serve as an example for those who might be having bad thoughts and keep them from making any trouble. Especially now that world order has collapsed, him becoming a dictator in order to properly lead and protect everyone is probably the best choice.

  5. Thanks a lot bro for the chapter. I really wish he can get a good sword. Btw what imitation tang sword looks like??? Oh yeah the new look of the site is awesome 🙂

  6. I just have to comment this one to settle my mind….
That was a really stupid move by yue…. We all know that experience is very important, and he just executed 8 men who experienced the dread of L2… Such a waste. They have more room to improve
